i-DAT 314 – artHYPE – Students & Graduates

As artHYPE’s initial promotion, we plan to target university under-graduates and graduates in the art field. After discussing different ideas with current students and graduates, we plan to offer free web space for artists to upload their work online, aswell as promoting their work through a unique ranking and voting system.

artHYPE will also be a fantastic networking tool for graduates, with the ability to add and view members contacts. This not only benefit graduates but also potential employees, allowing them to quickly and easily discover new and upcoming talent.

We also plan to offer an offline gallery, which will be shown to the public on a monthly basis.

We will target customers through other online services and networks, as well as advertising through students unions and newsletters.

i-DAt 314 – Interview with a Illustrator

- What are you main motivations behind your artwork?
Well, some of it is that I like to show off things I’ve made, so I make things to show off XD I also like art as a way of expressing stories and emotion. Having a picture or some text as an interface between me and the viewer, rather than just telling them, makes it easier to do. I also enjoy the process. Lately, I’ve been doing some anatomy drawing, and it’s a fun challenge.

- Does the internet have a negative or positive effect on art in general?
Definitely positive. Being able to talk to other artists and see their work so easily motivates me to improve, and online friends giving feedback motivates me just to keep making things.

- Do you see your artwork as a commercial venture, what are you trying to achieve?
Not commercial at all. I’ve considered taking commissions for charity now and then (like, working in exchange for charity donations), but I haven’t yet because I work so slowly that a fair price in terms of hours worked would be too much based on the final product – lots of other people can do the same quality of work faster.

- Obviously technology has had quite a significant effect on art, what in your opinion does the future hold?
Hopefully, digital art becoming more accepted as art once people realize that the computer doesn’t do all the work for you. It’s pretty hard to know what the future of computing technology is, though. I’m an information technology major, and some of my professors think the singularity is coming in the next decade. The singularity is when computers become intelligent enough to write their own software upgrades and design their own hardware. Some people think it’s going to be an apocalyptic event, but I don’t see why it has to be – no real reason for the computers to want to destroy us, and even if humans are no longer the most intelligent beings on the planet, we’re intelligent in different ways than computers are.

i-DAT 314 – Interview with a Digital Artist (Kaber D)

- What are you main motivations behind your artwork?

I would have to say there a few main motivations. First-creativity. I have a very firtile imagination and I have always wanted to bring the worlds I imagine to life. To see them in real time, full color, in front of me. Of course the second main motivation is money! Once I realized I could make a living from my imagination I was in!. Now it’s just a matter of striving for perfection and developing my skills to be able make a living at it.
3rd is the wow factor. I love it when people look at my work and they’re like, “Wow!” There are many artists I do the same with and it’s a shared experience. The artist gets a little giddy feeling that they’re work impressed someone and I get a giddy feeling when I see work that blows me away. It’s like seeing another world. I geuss ultimatly it is that exploration of the unknown, that sence of discovery and escape from reality that leads me back to my original motivation-creativity. each painting is a new world. Even as I paint it, it also paints itself. Details emerge that I would not have seen had I not put it to “canvas”

- Does the internet have a negative or positive effect on art in general?

Oh I think the interenet has a positive effect on my art and in general. The internet has not only allowed us to see classical painters such as rembrant and picasso but also the infinite number of worlds of others. Sure competition is fierce when it comes to marketing but more artists can get their work seen by more people, cheaper and easier than through galleries. It has also opened the door for artists to share their knowledge and build communities such as DeviantArt where creative people from all cultures and walks of life can communicate and share without many of the barriers that hinder us when face to face. Communities where people can learn tolerance, acceptance, constructive critiquing and help with life as well as building friendships through art and because of art.

- Do you see your artwork as a commercial venture, what are you trying to achieve?

Well..yes it is a commercial venture but ultimately I geuss I want to gain immortality through my art as well as build worlds for others to enjoy and play in visually. To explore. Although, equally motivating is that desire to set my oun hours, work creativly and make enough money to retire early and be financially sound. I’m not to nieve to believe that will happen with my art alone and without hard work but it’s a dream. It’s what I want to achieve.

- Obviously technology has had quite a significant effect on art, what in your opinion does the future hold?

The future!? It’s anybodys geuss. I’m already seeing a move toward virtual galleries. Cell phone Apps are the next big thing and where that leads is hard to say when talking about art. Art is subjective. I do hope to see more artistic design in buildings, sulptures. If I had to geuss I think that would be the next leap forward. Digital art is everywhere and the downside to that is overexposure. Eventually, I think, we will begin to see a rise in scuplture and architectural design since these will leave a more permanent mark of a society and an artist indiviually. We may start to see those “space age” cities. Art will also become more interactive as people demand a more immersive experience. A substitue for drugs even, or combined with drugs, to create whole new altered states.

i-DAT 314 – Personal Project Assesement

As I’m a creative person and my main skills being in the design sector, when I was informed not one, but two presentations would be part of the module brief I felt slightly nervous. I knew my presentation experience was slim and I never favored standing up and speaking in front of a large crowd I also knew I needed to gain more presentation skills if I were to get a full-time job.

For the first part of my Venture Culture module, I had to set-up a company, and produce an initial presentation being a 30 second brief of my company idea, with no visual aids and the second being a 5 minute presentation with visual aids. My plan was to create a company which would offer a new media service a wide range of clients, whether they are start-up or already existing companies. I planned to offer everything from Photography to Web design, a one stop shop for companies looking for a fast and easy media service. As I was not fully convinced on the idea, I found this initial pitch very hard. As I watched the video back its obvious I was nervous and underprepared. I realized just how weak my presentation skills where.

I sourced as much information I could on improving my presentation skills and it was obvious I needed to work on my body language, I could see from my initial presentation that I was moving around a lot, and my hands where too much of a distraction. Although my strengths where that I was well spoken and projected my voice well.

Shortly after I shared my idea, I discovered several other students had a similar idea. I also knew I wanted to link this module with my Final Major Project. So I went back to the drawing board, looked at my Final Major Project idea, and decided to create the brand and identity for that idea. At this point artHYPE was founded, an online art community and portfolio site, a creative space that provides art marketing tools and serves as a hub for self promotion for us as artists.

My first task was to come up with a name, I wanted something that was catchy, simple to remember and to the point. I shared a couple of names with my fellow students, and came to the conclusion that artHYPE ticked all the boxes. I then went on to create the logo and identity.

By the time the second presentation came round I was well prepared, I created several short but to the point slides as well as a few notes to accompany them. Being able to use a visual guide helped me portray my company brand and identity effectively to others. It also gave me the opportunity to share my logo with others. After I watched the presentation back it was obvious from my body language that I was still slightly nervous, but a big improvement on my initial presentation. I used my strengths and effectively projected my voice and spoke well. Although part way through my presentation there was a slight technical issue with the projector, I stayed focused and got straight back to the point.

The best part of this project, in my opinion was being able to see my weakness and strengths by watching the presentations back. It helped me easily identity that I moved round too much, which was a major distraction, I knew for my second presentation I needed to try to firmly plant me feet on the floor and try not to move my hands too much. Although there was a large improvement between the first and second presentation, I believe my confidents will come with time, and the more presentations I deli ever will benefit me greatly.

In the future, I feel that this project will help me not only with my presenting skills and sharing my ideas to others, but also giving me the confidents to stand up and speak in front of others, an essential skill in the professional design industry. Also for personal and professional improvement and growth I need to embrace my strengths and weaknesses. I must use my strengths to my advantage, to be more effective in the creative and design sector, but I also need to identify and try to overcome my weaknesses, especially my public speaking skills. If I do not actively work to overcome my weak areas, they will just become weaker and my growth will be stifled professionally, letting my personality traits interfere with my job. The tasks set within this i-DAT 314 Venture Culture module accurately helped me identify both strengths and weaknesses, as well as gave good suggestions to how I can deal with both.
